Chapter 10: Luna Lovegood
- Her eyes ranged over Neville and came to rest on Harry. [pg. 185]
- She did not seem to blink quite as much as normal humans. She stared and stared at Harry, who had taken the seat opposite her and now wished he had not.
"Have a good summer, Luna?" Ginny asked.
"Yes," said Luna dreamily, without taking her eyes off Harry. "Yes, it was quite enjoyable, you know. You're Harry Potter," she added.
"I know I am," said Harry. [pg. 185]
- "I'll carry that owl, if you like," said Luna to Harry, reaching out for Pigwidgeon as Neville stowed Trevor carefully in an inside pocket.
"Oh - er - thanks," said Harry, handing her the cage and hoisting Hedwig's more securely in his arms. [pg. 195]
- "It's all right," said a dreamy voice from beside Harry as Ron vanished into the coach's dark interior. "You're not going mad or anything. I can see them too."
"Can you?" said Harry desperately, turning to Luna. He could see the bat-winged horses reflected in her wide, silvery eyes.
"Oh yes," said Luna, "I've been able to see them ever since my first day here. They've always pulled the carriages. Don't worry, you're just as sane as I am." [pg. 199]
Chapter 13: Detention With Dolores
- A few seconds later, Luna Lovegood emerged, trailing behind the rest of the class, a smudge of earth on her nose and her hair tied in a knot at the top of her head. When she saw Harry, her prominent eyes seemed to bulge excitedly and she made a beeline straight for him. Many of his classmates turned curiously to watch. Luna took a great breath and then said, without so much as a preliminary hello, "I believe He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named is back, and I believe you fought him and escaped him."
"Er - right," said Harry awkwardly. [pg. 261]
- "Do you mind not offending the only people who believe me?" Harry asked Hermione as they made their way into class. [pg. 262]
Chapter 19: The Lion and the Serpent
- Harry could hear Luna's ludicrous lion hat roaring amidst the Gryffindor cheers and felt heartened... [pg. 410]
Chapter 21: The Eye of the Snake
- Harry had only just managed to get the last of them [Dobby's Christmas ornaments] down before the door creaked open and Luna Lovegood entered, looking dreamy as always.
"Hello," she said vaguely, looking around at what remained of the decorations. "These are nice, did you put them up?"
"No," said Harry, "it was Dobby the house-elf."
"Mistletoe," said Luna dreamily, pointing at a large clump of white berries placed almost over Harry's head. He jumped out from under it. "Good thinking," said Luna very seriously. "It's often infested with nargles." [pg. 452-453]
Chapter 32: Out of the Fire
- "There's no need to take that tone with me," [Ginny] said coolly. "I was only wondering whether I could help."
"Well, you can't," said Harry shortly.
"You're being rather rude, you know," said Luna serenely.
Harry swore and turned away. The very last thing he wanted now was a conversation with Luna Lovegood. [pg. 735]
Chapter 34: The Department of Mysteries
- "Can't anyone else hear it?" Harry demanded, for the whispering and murmuring was becoming louder; without meaning to put it there, he found his foot was on the dais.
"I can hear them too," breathed Luna, joining them around the side of the archway and gazing at the swaying veil. "There are people in there!" [pg. 774]
Chapter 38: The Second War Begins
- "Hello," said Luna vaguely, glancing around at him as she stepped back from the notice.
"How come you're not at the feast?" Harry asked.
"Well, I've lost most of my possessions," said Luna serenely. "People take them and hide them, you know. But as it's the last night, I really do need them back, so I've been putting up signs."
She gestured toward the notice board, upon which, sure enough, she had pinned a list of all her missing books and clothes, with a plea for their return.
An odd feeling rose in Harry - an emotion quite different from the anger and grief that had filled him since Sirius's death. It was a few moments before he realized that he was feeling sorry for Luna.
"How come people hide your stuff?" he asked her, frowning.
"Oh... well..." she shrugged. "I think they think I'm a bit odd, you know. Some people call me 'Loony' Lovegood, actually."
Harry looked at her and the new feeling of pity intensified rather painfully.
"That's no reason for them to take your things," he said flatly. "Do you want help finding them?"
"Oh no," she said, smiling at him. "They'll come back, they always do in the end. It was just that I wanted to pack tonight." Anyway... why aren't you at the feast?"
Harry shrugged. "Just didn't feel like it."
"No," said Luna, observing him with those oddly misty, protuberant eyes. "I don't suppose you do. That man the Death Eaters killed was your godfather, wasn't he? Ginny told me."
Harry nodded curtly, but found that for some reason he did not mind Luna talking about Sirius. He had just remembered that she too could see thestrals.
"Have you..." he began. "I mean, who... has anyone you've known ever died?"
"Yes," Luna said simply, "my mother. She was quite an extraordinary witch, you know, but she did like to experiment and one of her spells went rather badly wrong one day. I was nine."
"I'm sorry," Harry mumbled.
"Yes, it was rather horrible," said Luna conversationally. "I still feel very sad about it sometimes. But I've still got Dad. And anyway, it's not as though I'll never see Mum again, is it?"
"Er - isn't it?" said Harry uncertainly.
She shook her head in disbelief. "Oh, come on. You heard them, just behind the veil, didn't you?
"You mean..."
"In that room with the archway. They were lurking just out of sight, that's all. You heard them."
They looked at each other. Luna was smiling slightly. Harry did not know what to say, or to think. Luna believed so many extraordinary things... yet he had been sure he had heard voices behind the veil too...
"Are you sure you don't want me to help you look for your stuff?" he said.
"Oh no," said Luna. "No, I think I'll just go down and have some pudding and wait for it all to turn up... It always does in the end... Well, have a nice holiday, Harry."
"Yeah... yeah, you too."
She walked away from him, and as he watched her go, he found that the terrible weight in his stomach seemed to have lessened slightly. [pg. 862-864]
